Goals and Objectives
The primary purpose of the College of Business at Jackson State University is to provide opportunities for (1) intellectual and professional development for students enrolled in its instructional programs; (2) discovery of new and useful knowledge through academic and applied research; (3) effective application of knowledge in business and economics toward addressing state, region, and nation issues through service activities. The educational programs aim to provide students with the basic knowledge in business and related disciplines that will provide them with the needed skills and competencies required to pursue business careers and/or graduate studies. The student who graduates from the College of Business should: (1) be able to deal with the technical complexities of his/her chosen career; (2) have the ability to reason and independently make decisions; (3) possess good written and oral communication skills; (4) possess good computer skills; (5) have an appreciation for the human condition; (6) have an inclusive perspective on society and its progress; and (7) have an appreciation of the global/international dimensions of the economy and business. In general each of our graduates should have the skills and competencies required to ensure success in his/her chosen career or field of graduate study. The Career Services Office coordinates the external relations of the College of Business. The office assists in preparing business students to achieve their career objectives and/or pursue advanced studies in business and creates partnerships through which students may secure challenging internships and career opportunities. Through this office, scores of corporations, businesses, and government agencies participate in classroom, recruitment, and extracurricular activities. Moreover, the office organizes activities through which business alumni may contribute to the improvement and enlargement of the College and assists in the coordination of quality learning opportunities in a variety of business subjects (i.e., real estate, finance, entrepreneurship, accounting, management, and marketing) for the urban community. As a result, students who participate in experiential learning are considered to be full-time students during their assigned co-op or internship. In addition to academic instruction, the College is committed to conducting research on important business and economic subjects and providing service to support business, government, and other organizations involved in business and economics. The research and service components of the mission are supported by the Center for Business Development and Economic Research. The Center coordinates funded research and service grants/contracts. The Center also coordinates the College’s “Business and Economic Review” publications, provides a research monographs, and various reports and publications to the business community. The Center also manages the Small Business Development Center which delivers training and community services to small or disadvantaged business enterprises. Many students have the opportunity to participate in the various programs offered through the Center.
